Loop Engineering Maturity Assessment

Find your current level — from manual prompting to scheduled, multi-agent, and self-improving loops — and the single next upgrade that moves you forward.

This is a practical maturity model, not an official industry standard.

The 7 Levels of Loop Engineering Maturity

L0Manual Ask

You ask the AI one thing at a time and manually drive every step.

L1Reusable Prompt

You reuse structured prompts, but the human still controls the workflow.

L2Workflow

You chain multiple steps, tools, or prompts together, but validation is mostly manual.

L3Goal Loop

The agent works toward a durable goal and checks a completion condition.

L4Scheduled Loop

The loop runs on a schedule or event trigger with stop conditions and reports.

L5Multi-Agent Loop

Specialized agents split work, review each other, or run in isolated worktrees.

L6Self-Improving Loop

The loop updates its own playbooks, memory, skills, or evaluation criteria under human-approved boundaries.

Main risk at this level

Manual checking is the bottleneck and is easy to skip.

Next upgrade

Add automated validation and a durable completion condition.

How to Level Up

Each level builds on the one below it. Add the missing capability — reusable prompts, automated validation, retry logic, hard stops, scheduling, independent review — one step at a time. Do not skip the safety gates: human approval for high-risk actions matters at every level.
